27 injured, 6 Killed in blasts near Afghan university

A powerful bomb exploded outside the gates of Kabul University in the Afghan capital on Friday, killing at least six people and wounding 27, according to police and health officials. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest to target Kabul. Afghan security forces are facing almost daily attacks by Taliban militants, despite reported progress in efforts by the United States to broker an end to Afghanistan’s nearly 18-year war.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday’s blast just hours after Taliban militants set off two car bombs outside police headquarters in the southern city of Kandahar, killing at least 12 and wounding more than 80. Afghanistan’s Health Ministry says at least eight people have been killed when an explosion struck near the entrance to Kabul University.

Dr. Wahidullah Mayar, a ministry spokesman, said on July 19 that 33 people had also been wounded and taken to hospital. The university compound houses several hostels where many students stay over the summer, attending classes and conducting research. The university is co-educational. Though Friday is the start of the weekend in Afghanistan, Massoud, an economics professor at the university who like many Afghans uses only one name, said that several lawyers were taking their exams to become judges when the explosion occurred. It wasn't immediately clear if the lawyers were the target.
