Panaji, Aug 8 (IANS) Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday urged the people to contribute to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to help the government carry out relief and rehabilitation work after heavy rains and subsequent floods lashed the state.
Sawant told the State Legislative Assembly that the government is in the process of conducting a damage assessment of the losses caused by the heavy rains and floods. He also said that the Central government would be approached for financial assistance to tide over the situation.
"I appeal to industrialists and the people of Goa to contribute to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund so that the money can be helped to conduct relief and rehabilitation works," Sawant said during Zero Hour.
He also appreciated Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo who offered Rs 5 lakh towards the fund during a discussion on the issue in the Assembly.
Sawant also said that assessment of the damage and the losses caused by the floods would be completed in four days.
"We will understand the losses caused in four days. We are in the process of conducting a survey. Drones will also be used. Rehabilitation works will be assessed and we will also request the Centre for funds to compensate for the losses," he said.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Goa has already received 86 per cent of its seasonal monsoon rainfall which has crossed the 100-inch mark.
