Ajay Devgn’s next directorial venture, ‘Mayday’, has begun filming this December. The movie, where he also stars, also features the legend and veteran Amitabh Bachchan, as well as Rakul Preet Singh, in lead roles. It is set for a release date in April 2022, and is reportedly being shot in Hyderabad. It is on a start-to-finish schedule, although those plans may now have to be changed since Rakul Preet Singh recently tested positive for COVID-19. She will play the role of a pilot in this movie, although Devgn and Bachchan’s roles have not yet been revealed. This will also be her second film with Devgn after ‘De De Pyaar De’ in 2019, while Bachchan and Devgn have worked together multiple times, in the likes of “Khakee”, “Satyagraha”, “Major Saab”, “Aag”, “Hindustan Ki Kasam” and “Teen Patti”. The movie is also being produced by Devgn’s production house Ajay Devgn FFilms.
Of all of their past work together, perhaps ‘Teen Patti’ is one of their best movies, even though Devgn only has a small cameo appearance in the movie. The movie was inspired by the Hollywood movie ‘21’, and also features another titan of the movie world, Sir Ben Kingsley. However, rather than blackjack, it is the traditional Indian card game of teen patti that is the focus here. In fact, teen patti is perhaps the most popular card game in India, even now, with online casino games in India proving to be quite common. Many casino operators have begun offering players the chance to play teen patti online as well as a result. This movie looked to capitalize on that popularity, with Bachchan playing the role of a mathematics professor, who receives an invitation from a British mathematician, played by Kingsley, to a high roller casino in London.
Bachchan tells Kingsley about a mathematical equation he has devised which can crack randomness and probability, and thereby change the way mathematics is used, as well as having a more practical use in terms of being able to predict cards in card games as well. He submits this theory to his institute, who reject it, and so he recruits some of his brightest students, along with a junior professor, to test it out in reality. They infiltrate some underground card games, frequented by mafia bosses and the like, to test their theory, while another student also gets them access into high roller clubs and parties. All of this begins to unravel when the students get greedier, with blackmail beginning to take place, and they also begin to betray one another, all to Bachchan’s chagrin who only wanted more evidence to prove his theory and was not interested in the money at all. What follows is the classic tale of regret and redemption, with the likes of Devgn and a couple more famous names also making cameo appearances along the way.
Of course, ‘Mayday’ is a totally different movie, but it is apparently a thriller, so fans can probably expect a similar entertaining ride when this movie does get released. That is still some time away though, with fans also being excited by yet another collaboration between Devgn, who has been one of the most consistent actors in the Indian film industry over the last two decades, and Bachchan, who is the original superstar, and despite being 78 years old, the evergreen actor has shown no signs of slowing down. It remains to be seen if ‘Mayday’ will be any good, but one can be sure that Bachchan will be one of the top draws of that movie, no matter what the plot or story, or how his cast members act.
