Madrid Open: Rafael Nadal wins 50th consecutive set on clay, breaks John McEnroe's record

Rafael Nadal clinched third round of the Madrid Open by defeating Diego Schwartzman in the straight sets by 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday. With this win, he broke the record of John McEnroe of 49 straight sets victory that he made on the same surface in year 1984.

“When my career is over, these are things that are going to be there for always. It’s difficult to be able to win 50 sets in a row,” Nadal affirmed.

Now, Nadal will face off Dominic Thiem in the next game. “On this surface, (Thiem) is one of the most dangerous players you can face. Tomorrow is a key match in the tournament,” Nadal added.

On the other hand, second-seeded Alexander Zverev beat Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-2 and now will face off John Isner in next match.

Rafael Nadal has clinched 38 of his final 39 matches on his preferential clay. In the first set, Nadal took a lead by 4-2 when Schwartzman was doing lot of faults. In the second set, he dominated Schwartzman to break him.

On the other hand, In the women’s tournament, Pliskova has reached to the semifinals after Caroline Wozniacki and Garbine Muguruza were thrashed away on Wednesday. She will now face off Petra Kvitova in the semifinals after she beat Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-0.
