Vikas Khanna’s directorial debut makes it to the final list of final list of Oscar 2020 Nomination for Best Feature Film and Chet turned filmmaker says it’s a miracle.
'The Last Color' is a film about the daily struggles for survival on the streets of the ancient city of Banaras, India. The film stars Neena Gupta in the lead role.
Talking about Oscar nomination and eligibility, Vikas said, “My film is eligible for the nomination in Best Feature Film 2020 Oscar’s category. It is an important day for me. It is a miracle for me. This is a big deal for anyone who dreams, and dreams with full conviction.”
The film addresses an age old taboo surrounding widows in Vrindavan and Varanasi in India. The film deals with how a 9-year old tightrope walker befriends one such widow and promises to add color to her life. The film is adapted from Khanna's own book 'The Last Color'.
Talking about the struggles and challenges the filmmaker Vikas Khanna faced, he credited Neena Gupta for the support. He said, “Neena Gupta always told me that films are made with a lot of heart, and trust me I got the heart and passion to make the film and I will make it. It was challenging to get the ball rolling; numerous people didn’t join the team, they had their own presumptions that what sort of movie is this? A film based on friendship between a 60 years old widow and a little untouchable little girl, who walks on the rope (acrobat), that is not a story because there is no hero in it”
“I firmly believed in the story, and I knew the story is the hero. The friendship between the characters is the hero of the story. I’d approached a lot of people and been turned down by most of them, stating I got no credibility. I feel whenever you start something new, and no one trusts you, it is okay. As long as you have faith in yourself, an unshakable faith and you should be able to believe that magic will occur and it will. Keep on trying and walking your faith, your destination might be far but someday you will reach it” added Vikas.
The film has been making rounds at international film circuit and will soon release in India.
