The art of making babies : Learn more about Assisted Reproductive Techniques

Through the use of assisted reproduction techniques, doctors have successfully treated infertility, giving the couples best chance possible at conceiving. Through IVF, numerous couples have been able to get pregnant and bring their babies into the world. But the success of the process depends inexplicably on an embryologist, who works behind doors to increase the efficacy of the entire IVF procedure.

The effectiveness of fertility treatment depends largely on embryologists’ precision and quality control in the entire process, i.e. from the development of a zygote (fertilized egg) to its maturation. They work to imitate the natural process of reproduction, except with more precision and certainty.

One of the leading Indian embryologists who has devoted her career towards ART and IVF success, Dr Goral Gandhi, emphasizes on creating awareness and better opportunities for the practice of clinical embryology and ART. Moreover, Goral Gandhi has also offered her expertise to more than 500 embryologists in various aspects of IVF, embryology, quality care and management in clinical laboratories. While talking about the process of vitrification in LIFE conference, Goral Gandhi stated the need to further develop embryology in India, giving patients the best possible chance at both preserving and extending their fertility.

For embryologists, the embryo is the patient that they are caring for, which could eventually turn into a healthy baby. Therefore, they have to evaluate patient materials carefully, be it egg, sperm, or embryo and make crucial decisions about their quality and utilization. Also, the availability of modern technology and critical expertise play an essential role in the success of IVF through building an ideal environment for embryo culture, and embryo freezing.

Asserting the demand for frozen oocytes (eggs) and embryos, and their viability leading to positive outcomes in pregnancies worldwide, Dr. Goral Gandhi strongly supports the practice of egg freezing for fertility preservation in clinics. It has, indeed, helped women become mothers to healthy children, and experience parenthood. Oocyte cryopreservation has been able to circumvent age-related infertility and is thus being widely utilized. Adding to the need for improving oocyte cryopreservation, Dr Samantha Pfeifer, chairwoman of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine’s practice committee says, “The technology and technique are getting better, and success rates are good.”

Determining the direction which embryo development can lead to, embryologists worldwide give embryos the best chance at transitioning into healthy offsprings’, thus, giving the desired outcome to the entire process of IVF.
