The best Indian TV shows of 2020

With half the year already having gone by, there have been some excellent TV shows which have been already released on Indian streaming platforms. We profile some of these in this list -

Paatal Lok (Amazon Prime Video)

This is one of the best TV shows to have been released on Indian streaming platforms over the last few years. This murder mystery sees a cop get involved in the murder of a journalist, and as he digs deeper, the involvement of businessmen, politicians and bureaucrats shows him that the system is geared towards corruption and power. Paatal Lok has been called one of the best shows on Indian TV, and is definitely a must-watch.

Aarya (Disney+ Hotstar)

This recently launched show on Disney+ Hotstar has caught the attention of fans all over the country. It is a tightly written drama, with erstwhile Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen playing the lead character, who has to take over the family business in a male-dominated society. The show has been praised for using Sen in a role in which she has not been seen so far, and has been extremely successful so far.

The Casino (ZEE5)

This is a pathbreaking show in the Indian context since there have been very few shows or movies focused on casino games for real money which have been produced in India. This show follows the story of the heir to one of the largest casinos in Nepal, and the struggle for control over the business, with his father’s mistress trying to snatch the business away from him. There is a lot of drama, intrigue and suspense in this casino-based thriller, and it has been quite popular among Indian fans.

Special Ops (Disney+ Hotstar)

Another offering on Hotstar, this show follows agents of the Indian spy agency RAW as they try to find an elusive terrorist mastermind, using the clues from a series of attacks carried out by his group. It had one of India’s best young filmmakers, Neeraj Pandey, at the helm, and with a stellar cast having the likes of Kay Kay Menon and Vinay Pathak, this series has received a lot of praise from Indian audiences this year.

Asur (Voot Select)

Asur is a mythological thriller, with a murder mystery thrown into the mix as well. A killer is on the loose, and he leaves behind the same modus operandi after every crime, with those hints leading towards a particular investigating officer with whom he is playing a game of cat-and-mouse. While the lead cast is not the strongest in terms of acting ability, the overall story and the path the show takes is praiseworthy, and makes it one of the better Indian shows this year.

Panchayat (Amazon Prime Video)

This original series by Amazon Prime Video has Jitendra Kumar, who has become a bonafide star in India on the back of his performances in various web series, as the protagonist, who is looking to clear the exam for the Indian civil services, but the events in his local village serve to distract and then eventually take over his daily life. Raghubir Yadav and Neena Gupta play very strong supporting roles in this excellent take on life in an Indian village, and Kumar’s performance is also praiseworthy, making this a definite watch if you are on the lookout for good Indian shows.

These are some of the best Indian TV shows of this year so far. With half of 2020 still to go and some big releases lined up on various streaming services, expect to see more of these shows come to the fore as online streaming becomes more and more popular in the country.
