Top 5 Contenders for Purple Cap in IPL 2019
The IPL purple cap is a prestigious award won by the highest wicket taker of IPL. However, there has always been a neck to neck battle for this cap, just like all others. With the IPL 2019 around the corner, we have gotten all curious about who could end up as the highest wicket taker of this season.
While everyone will be keeping an eye on the IPL points table, the purple cap table will also be closely kept an eye on. In this article, we pick the top five bowlers who could end up with the purple cap.
The players of England and Australia who will be leaving early for the World Cup are not being mentioned in this list.
- Rashid Khan (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
Rashid Khan is that Afghan warrior who has dominated the T20 cricket with his fingers in the last two seasons. His performance has been spectacular not only by his bowling skills but also by his batting skills, which he has acquired gradually though.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad are fortunate enough to have Rashid Khan on their side in IPL 2019. In the last season of IPL, Rashid Khan had missed the IPL Purple Cap by a narrow margin but it is highly likely that the leg break bowler wouldn't let go of the Purple Cap this time.
- Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians)
If you are taking your squad into the battle without a player like Jasprit Bumrah, you are surely heading to a loss. Such has been the importance of players like Jasprit Bumrah in T20 cricket in the past few months. Nowadays, young bowlers such as Bumrah are also responsible for taking match winning wickets under pressure, particularly in the final overs of the game. And seeing Bumrah's performance over the past few months, it is undeniable that Bumrah will let the Purple Cap go untouched in the tournament.
- Trent Boult (Delhi Capitals)
Trent Boult has been in a tremendous form in the past few months and everyone has seen his performance lately when he single handedly took nine Sri Lankan players down in a match. Trent has all the qualities of a world class bowler and can easily win the purple cap in IPL 2019.
But, it is for sure that his path to that achievement will be tested every now and then, as there are a lot of big names already in the line of contenders.
- Kuldeep Yadav (Kolkata Knight Riders)
This Indian player is known to save runs while bowling and has maintained a great economy rate of less than five in ODIs played in 2018 and of less than six in T20Is played in 2018. However, his wicket taking ability hasn't suffered due to his bowling and he has taken 45 wickets in ODI alone in 2018 and 21 wickets in T20Is. Therefore, he can be a gem for the Kolkata Knight Riders who shall be relying on him a lot for their next title claim.
- Andrew Tye (Kings XI Punjab)
When you are compiling a list of top contenders for the purple cap, you cannot miss the current holder of that cap. Andrew Tye was the winner of the purple cap in 2018 by taking 24 wickets in 14 matches and will leave no stone unturned to keep up that performance.
However, due to the poor performance of Punjab in the last few seasons, he might miss the playoffs if Punjab fails to qualify. This will cut short his number of matches and increase his pressure for performance.
